I am going nuts – losing fifty pounds Day #62

I am going nuts. And seeds. And whole food plant-based and flexi too. Somewhat going ‘Mediterranean‘ and enjoying more fish (even if there are a few question marks over the widely promoted benefits of fish) and keeping it all very practical and balanced and all-things-included. I am exploring and investing in my own wellness, my relationship with food (what, when and how) and building new habits.

16.08.23: As time went on, more and more plants. With plants including (VLGNSHS) more legumes and grains. It would turn out, that I really do like legumes and beans tartine – beans-on-toast.

Second, that as time past, themes surfaced and they seemed to surface in threes. The process, the adventure starts with a line of enquiry, an “explore,” which is often coupled with an “explore and educate.” A podcast on the morning walk, a new article link, onto more research. Then find a “who’s who,” or expert and listen or read or watch what they have to say. Then read a more serious post or few. Then apply and then a mixture of all three.

  • Nutrition. Wellness. Habits.
  • “explore, experiment, educate”
  • “longer, larger, liquid”
  • “prepare, portion,…” ??? pack?

On the education track

This is quite a departure from my usual education fodder, however, it is ‘education.’ Or at least a re-education, my re-education. I have been reading, watching and listening, and then overwriting far more of my outdated, misinformed and over-generalised ‘Sport and Exercise Science’ degree knowledge (eg macro nutrients and calories and expenditure) than I am comfortable admitting. There are a number of key myths and miss truths challenged. It is almost a complete re-write and re-coding. Nutrition, wellness and habits are more complex and inter-connected than I thought.

At the same time, I have been repairing my relationship with food and perspective on healthy nutrition and eating – again what, when and how I eat. Sixty days on, fifty pounds lighter, here is how the network of information is meshing together from this relatively young and emerging field of research. (I would go on to write about this journey at Day #82, #98 and #104)

Be prepared, there is a lot of information to digest (sorry), there is also a lot of misinformation to disregard or at least rethink. So let’s look at the landscape under broad headings and curated resources. First the “Who’s who?” and then nutrition, wellness and nutrition habits.

Who’s who?

Here is how it is shaping up. The mesh of ‘who, what, when and how’ has started to weave together under three broad curated headings and the messages have started to largely confirm one another. Three key interlinked and accessible voices kicked off this investigation: Dr Michael Mosley, Professor Tim Spector and Dr Chris Van Tulleken @DoctorChrisVT with the woven threads of nutrition, wellness and nutrition habits beginning to surface.

Be prepared, there is a lot of information to digest (sorry), there is also a lot of misinformation to disregard or at least rethink and myths to be aware of. So let’s look at the landscape, starting with “Who’s who?” and then the three broad and interwoven headings of nutrition, wellness and nutrition habits that have started to surface.
