Slumdog Camera Angles

Slumdog Pythagoras – Minimally Invasive Education  was posted on December 11, 2010 by Mr Stucke. Beaten to punch, humbled into action, on Sunday evening I penned a second Sugata Mitra teaching experiment.

I am not planning to cover the topic of MIE, Dan has already done a great job of that, so here is the setting, desired outcome and task.

Year 7 English, Period 1 Monday AM, Topic, Matilda.

Like Dan I followed some basic rules, split the students into groups (3-4), gave them a PC and wrote the question that needed solving on the board. They were free to transfer groups, glean input from others, but in this instance there was no exam question to test them, but the students did have to prepare a micro presentation as an outcome.

As is often the case with this class, no sooner had I nearly written the first question on the whiteboard, the students started to ask their own questions. (The clip was embedded in the web resource).

Identify the different camera angles used in the the Matilda clip below.

How do the camera angles from Matilda influence our understanding of the characters?

My response to their questions….

I am sorry, I don’t know. What I do know is that there are a number of different angles to research.

At that point, I clammed up and they just got on.

To conclude the class, the students shared their finding in 1 minutes micro presentations with me frantically trying to keep up, writing notes on the whiteboard. We didn’t get to fully review the Matilda clip as a proscribed tasks but the delay was well worth the wait, considering the excellent findings they shared. Dan, thanks for the impetus.
