Small consistent efforts

At some point, I will re-use this image. It is an assembly in the making. Most likely at the start of a new academic year, with Year 10.

For now, I have used the conveyed sentiment with my Year 8 class who are preparing for the English Speaking Board exam. First the pupils were charged with finding a poem or piece of drama they could “fall in love with.”

Today, for previous nine lessons, and the next five, I have started each lesson with five minutes of silent revision. Not one pupil complained. The focus has been impressive.

Why? This is personal. A self-select poem. A deadline. A clear expectation.

Many are now confidently sharing their “Speaking by Heart” piece in class- four days early. The confidence learning this two minute piece brings them is very rewarding to see. Meantime, I am learning If— by Rudyard Kipling. I am nearly there, I am keeping my head.

Many thanks to The Poetry Foundation @PoetryFound who’s recordings have helped a number of my pupils.
