Today has been a heady mix of independence, Self-Directed Learning, Catalytics, MOOCHing around, blended learning. Moodle Assignment Grading UX is getting an update (potentially by 3.1) and artificial intelligence is back in the headlines. Is this the answer to 1:1 or 1 to small group tutoring.

University College London’s Knowledge Lab argue that AI systems could simulate human one-to-one tutoring by delivering learning activities tailored to a student’s needs and providing targeted and timely feedback, all without an individual teacher present.

Even though AI itself is fascinating stuff, I am as interested in the masses of data that the trials will collect. Specifically what this data might be able to, ironically, teach us about learning. Whilst it is genuinely accepted that AI can be use to deliver tailor-made learning activities the report goes on to suggest that AI may even provide “a dynamic catalogue of the best teaching practices suited to the development of different skills and capabilities.” Exciting times.
