Plussing

Somwhere between the creative genius of Walt Disney and Pixar Studios is the idea of ‘plussing.’ It is a powerful way to critique work and move it on. A way to quickly reveal and expose the failings of an idea, a product, a film scene, suggest a better way of doing things, so that we can get on with the important business of correcting it. It is a technique that helps keep the fighting productive and intellectual. Without a positive alternative, you really have little to offer.

With plussing, the meetings are imbued with a positive tone and a direct connection between criticism and newer or better ideas for their work. The meetings still feel like a fight, but they feel like the healthy, respectful fights that keep couples, creative teams, and ideas growing and changing for the better.

It seems like this method could be helpful in all types of debates, even in raising the standards of my Y11 ‘Don’t get me started,’ essays or in leading staff CPD sessions.

Reveal, exposed, ‘plus’ and corrected. Not a bad mantra for a team moving forward.
