Swallow, Spit and Chew?

The curriculum we have is a ‘swallow’ and then ‘spit it out’ later curriculum. What we need, is a ‘chew on this’ curriculum.

This is not an exact quote but a paraphrasing of one of Mike Walters answers from a panel discussion. Now to think of ways to get students to chew on the curriculum. I fully appreciate why so many students chose not to savour the flavour of what they are dished, especially in ICT.

There were other inspiring thoughts shared by the panel, but I was working and listening so only made note of one or two. At this point, it is worth noting and thanking Learning Without Frontiers, who provided the Live Video stream of the event.

Learning, Fun, Edugaming?

Today I explored Moodle’s Games Module, at the end of the post I wanted a word that both describe ‘fun’ and ‘learning.’ A word to describe the process of edugaming (not that edugaming is a real work either) afforded by such activities, as far as I know, there isn’t one? So I am hoping to define the concept, if it has not been defined already?

A concept where learning is the primary aim, achieved when having fun or edugaming?

Flearning? Funearning? Learfun? Flun? What about French? LeFearn?  Learfunning? Learning with fun in the middle? Please Help!

It reminded me of the Piano Stairs, experiment. An experiment to see if it was possible to get more people to take the stairs rather than the escalator by making it more fun to do so?

Can we add more flun?? to learning / teaching and attain our learning outcomes. That is, to not simply accept students having fun, for good learning / teaching. Hmmm… have I found the focus on my edugaming enquiries…. possibly.

I often find reading Ewan McIntosh blog leaves me with plenty to consider. Today he provided coverage of John West-Burnham presentation at the Partners in Excellence Worldwide Innovative Education Forum. It is a very worthwhile read and there is no reason to paraphrase it here. I hope you enjoy it as I did.

Mount Orange School part 1

Moodle2

Like so many moodle users Hamble College have been reviewing and updating recent Moodle builds. Well, until we start building our Moodle we will be enrolling at Mount Orange School. According to the blurb the best way to use the site is to explore it ‘in character’. So that is what I intend to do, knowing that the very ultimate test will be to experience Moodle 2.0, along side our students, in our school Moodle.

Today, I am going to be…

a teacher, no surprise there then.

I know there are a lot of new tools to investigate, but what I will say is that this simple layout instantly looks very attractive. I particularly like the comments block, ( and to a lesser extent) the use of an RSS feedback that brings LIVE content and an organic, ‘what’s happening now’ engagement to the front page. My final point is I like the admin ‘voice’ being shared with users in ‘orange text’ – simple, subtle but visually effective.

Next, I am beginning to experience the benefit of the navigation and improve breadcrumbs. So, enrolled as a teacher I wanted to see who I was and quickly accessed my profile. I am pleased to department information in there, is it available in 1.99? Access to ‘my private files and a very useful messaging system. Excellent. Jeffrey Sanders are you in your PJs? I jest of course.

I dipped into the forums and I really liked to quick access to subscription emails and RSS feeds. Great for all RSS enthused teachers…. IMHO RSS feeds for teachers are a very effective tool to manage information flow as are moodle forum digests. All this Moodle goodness and I have even made it to a course yet and I am impressed.

Office 2010 Support

This evening I have read four education posts / tweets about the move from Office 2003 / 2007 to the fresh face Office 2010. I honestly believe that Office 2010 has educational benefits but as with all new software deployments it is wise to offer students and colleagues reassurance and support. If they choose to go it alone, all power to the.

Here are three tools to help provide that reassurance.

Free ebook: First Look Microsoft Office 2010

Microsoft Office 2010 interactive guide or just the ribbon guides here.

We made this available to our staff when moving from 2003 – 2007 on the VLE. With the introduction of the new ribbon, many staff found this tool very useful. Here it is again.

Lastly, lets not forget the UK Partners in Learning YouTube Channel. This provides a little more depth and creative application of Microsoft products, some you may be familiar with and others, you will be pleased to here are gratis. Reassurance remember.
