Weaving thoughts – PosEd

Day three on a #PosEd course and I find myself distracted by my own thoughts.

We are looking at how to build / promote positive relationships and I’m distracted. I am thinking about how positive relationships are being developed by David and Ron walking-the-walking. How the messages of the course, or more importantly the science behind the messages, is being woven into the delivery of the course.

So the Science –

  • We are hard-wired to connect and self-protect
  • Secure attachment in relationships predict well being
  • Every interaction matters
  • We are looking for 5:1 positive interaction ration

The weave – the woven actions and inaction

  • David and Ron are appreciative, show and express gratitude.
  • David is zestful. Ron is receptive.
  • Wait times are considerable, in fact Ron boasted about the length of his middle school administrator wait-time – now there’s a refreshing boast.
  • The 5:1 benchmark is surpassed

Observed ideas of PD within an international setting

Warm front: the venue, music and welcome. Stewards of staff’s time.

I was surprised how transformational the heavy purple velvet table clothes were in the PD space. Next steps – at #DISDubai would could really brighten up our PD space / events using our colours for table cloths.

Soo-fe-a added her phonetic pronunciation to her name card. Next step – make space on name cards/prisms for staff/attendees to add their phonetic names to promote mutual respect at staff PD events and parents evenings.

David “invites you” to turn to page 68. Next steps – rather than direct students learning, invite students to learn.

David apologises verbally for interrupting pair or group work with “thank you” hands. Next steps – share and model this in teaching or facilitating.

Positive interactions: Next steps – how to share “Yes and” responses from staff, promoting supportive affixes to students responses to deepen understanding. Aligned with ‘Cultures of Thinking,’ and responses such as “That is interesting, what makes you say that,” and possibly attempt to deepen understanding by employing 5 why’s?

Active constructive responses. Next steps – aim to respond actively and constructively. Listen attentively. Ask questions, encourage re-living, amplifying and savouring.

Positive Education is an intentional focus on student and staff wellbeing. There are many facets to Positive Education and many ways to successfully implement ‘Pos Ed’ into any school community.  The applied framework of ‘Learn It, Live It, Teach It, Embed It’ assists that adoption.
