Effective teachers – seek advice

Leaders and teachers who want to improve? How do you identify effective teachers?

We know that teachers interactions with colleagues impact their effectiveness. Drawing on 5 years of social network data from one school district, Spillane, Shirrell and Adhikari (2018) explored the relationship between teacher performance and teachers’ instructional advice and information interactions.

What do we learn? Results demonstrate that higher performing teachers are not more likely to be sought out for advice; instead, higher performing teachers are more likely to seek advice. Or as @Sam_Sims_ summarises

Highly effective teachers are more likely to seek advice from their colleagues but are no more likely to be approached for advice than their less effective peers.

If you are looking to identify current / future effective teachers – listen for those asking for support and advice.
