Wellington Leadership Institute

Our invitation to our first leadership seminar shows benefits of being part of a “team.” The growing family of Wellington schools, now six, now enabling more centralised training and collaboration (though understandable that the Chinese school weren’t present this time), under the umbrella of Wellington Leadership Institute. Founded on the core values of Wellington College: courage, integrity, respect, responsibility and kindness, the seminar was both a time to reflect on our own leadership, to take on a coaching role with leadership colleagues and to collaborate.

The familiar triad of strategic, tactical and operational the starting point before review four pillars of leadership and coaching conversations with our leadership peers.

  1. Set the vision – drawing up plans, awareness of educational and local landscape, forensic, analytical and reflective skills
  2. Communicate the vision – public speaking, arguing persuasively on paper, marketing your vision externally, persuading parents, students and staff
  3. Deliver the vision – building teams, chairing meetings, assessing, appointing and challenging people, command of data
  4. Redefining your vision – handling crisis, reflective and evaluative skills, being decisive and bold, strategic redesign skills in reformulating development plans

We reviewed our preparation task and discussed various key questions of leadership over a light dinner, before heading home. A positive evening topped off with confirmation today that I have been formally invited (and accepted) onto Ofquals list of Experts.

Just a quick addition, today I received a fantastic reminder that everyone sees and hears things in their own unique way. One of the points of advice about leadership was that leaders make their own weather. I heard that as we take the day as we find it and act as their own barometer. Today, in the midst of another busy day, I just received this picture in my inbox – thank you.

Made the weather
