David Didau doesn’t do…

20130316-110821.jpgI feel that the saturation of poetry teaching has left its mark – my next tattoo will most like be ‘OARSIM’ – onomatopoeia, alliteration, rhyme and rhythm, simile, imagery and metaphor. Hence David Didau, doesn’t do… dull. David doesn’t do ‘activities’ either.

What he does do is reflect on his practice, take risks, go off plan, leave personal post-it notes for students, consider marking as a planning, plan questions.

What he does do is, minimal form filling, bell work or door tasks, students to lead the intro whilst he takes the register.

David doesn’t do observers telling him that he could of done it ‘this way’

What he does do is use the question formulation technique, constructing, prioritising / disregarding and asking questions. Asks students to draft their writing. Uses the other teachers in the class (students) to assess work. Gets students to highlight areas of their drafting /writing that show they are taking risks. Writes with his students.

What he does do is admit to sometimes not getting to his class before the students (hence door tasks). Trains his students to recognise and use different types questions (probe, clarifying, recommend).

David doesn’t do card sort activities.

This is note of appreciate? A note of thanks for all the support and great conversation I have been privileged to engage with, with David and many other fantastic English foster colleagues.
