MoodleDock

It always starts with an idea. I was trying to use a WordPress app, Sociofluid with this blog but it didnt seem to work with this theme. Disappointed, I looked for other bookmarking plugin that that might enables readers of this blog to share posts in turn with their networks. Not that I was expecting my many people woudl want to share my ICT and middle leadership musing, but its the thought that counts.

So then the penny dropped. Our Moodle front page, like many schools Moodle front page, showcases our subject areas with icons. Easily/large clickable (is that a word) icons linking to courses… but what if these icons were much smaller? That would free up space for much needed prime space for school communications. Sociofluid influence my thinking and the ’Moodledock‘ idea surfaced.

The icons were shrunk, open code sourced and then I hit a brick wall. Without any coding experience myself, my eagerness to pursue this idea led to @MoodleDan via a Twitter post. He has been fantastic, helping our team bring this idea to our Moodle. One of technicians re-designed the Humbugs  backpacks breifcases and the other worked with MoodleDan code. There was a breif stumble with IE Compatiability Mode, but its been resolved.

Comments have been added to the code and we will shortly be in a position to share Moodledock with others. schools who want to use it. Not that I know how to officially share it, just yet, but I will find out. Afterall, I know a man, that knows how….. Thanks to MoodleDan, our team here @Hamble College and the Digital Leaders that reviewed it for us.

Record a Problem? Fantastic Tool!

Windows 7 built in tool ’Record a Problem’ (RaP, as I have fonderly nicknamed it) is a fantastic tool in its own right but I have other ideas for it!

Briefly, is you have a problem, ’Record a Problem’ allows you can capture the steps you are taking. This allows the user to send it as a single zip folder with all the screenshots and steps to a the network manager anyone,  who knows how to solve it.

From the search under Control Panel, type ‘Record a problem.’ You will get a Problem Steps screen recorder.

Click Start Record and proceed with the steps that led to a problem or failure of a program….. The program will record all the screen shots and each individual click that you made. You can also add a comment. When you click Stop Record, it will ask for a location to save the .mht (MHTML format) file which will be zipped. You can view this file in Internet Explorer. Thats a RaP.

This is great software for ‘howto’ demos. Easily convertable to ‘howto’ worksheets if needed. What I really like about the output is the program highlights the areas of the screenshot  you click on with a green highlight out line. I shared the idea with our E-Resources manager who was pleasantly surprised.
